Keeping It Unreal, Profile of LA based illustrators, Kozyndan, Spaces 2008

Kozyndan is the joint pseudonym of LA-based husband and wife team Kozue and Dan Kitchens who have gained great critical acclaim for their whimsical and occasionally absurd surreal graphic illustrations of modern cityscapes.

The pair met while specialising in illustration at California State University Fullerton, but their vastly different upbringings (Dan’s in Orange County California and Kozy’s in Japan’s countryside) have converged, giving them a unique perspective on this their imagined world. The unusual art they create traverses both the realms of fine art and commercial design. Their pieces are vibrant portraits of the urban landscape that surrounds us and are inspired by our social and cultural climate.

Their website claims these images “capture the hidden world of creatures and strange events that happen in every city, just beyond your peripheral vision…” This world is showcased in the aptly named book Urban Myths publishedby Giant robot. The book tells tales of magical sea slugs in love spreading colour unseen through the streets of Soho, half rabbit half fish creatures speeding around quiet city backstreets, and purple babies falling unobserved onto busy high streets…
