Gothic Revival, Profile of Artist Dan Hillier, Spaces 2008

If Dan HIllIer’s art were to be translated into prose, then it would be a union of the absurd musings of edward Gorey, macabre tales of edgar allen Poe and of lovecraft’s eye for detail and description.

With influences sprouting from old anatomy books, Victorian gothic novels and a self-confessed teenage enjoyment of death metal, Hillier creates ‘altered engravings’ of half humans magically transforming into tentacled and horned horrors. Hillier fuses his own ink drawings with found Victorian illustrations to create darkly humorous collages and scenes reminiscent of Victorian gothic imagery. “I want the pictures to feel both old and contemporary and to trigger some sort of recognition in the viewer that they can’t quite place”…
