Mumbai Modern, Elle Decoration 2012

Situated on Mumbai’s vibrant Marine Drive, this tranquil Art Deco apartment was one of the first to be built on the now bustling stretch of coastline that borders the Arabian Sea. All Change, Elle Decoration 2012

Constantly evolving, this atmospheric Amsterdam apartment has a double life as a unique concept store and gallery, where every one of its owner’s possessions is up for grabs…

Interior designer San Ming lives in a constant state of reinvention. He plans, designs and makes everything that adorns his clients’ homes, so you’d expect his own space in Amsterdam to be an extension of his creativity. What you might not expect is that this eclectic apartment – filled with objets d’art, paintings and his own handmade furniture designs – has a dual existence: three times a year San opens his doors to the public and sells absolutely everything he’s collected. He then starts the process all over again, completely redecorating each time.

Bold Ambition, Tamara Salman House Feature, Elle Decoration China/ 25 Underbara Hem Sweden/ Guardian Weekend Mag, 2009

Citing a passion for India, regular visits to Stately homes, shopping in Shanghai and her beloved London as paramount influences, Tamara Salman’s colourful home reflects an equally colourful character.

Our hallway is the colour of a peeled red onion skin. To re-create that on the walls we painted yellow first then a dark red satin on top to give it depth.”

Tamara’s career as creative-director for Liberty and foundations in Italian fashion houses Romeo Gigli and Prada means she uses colour with confidence. Her experience is echoed in the bold hues and textile inspired patterns in her home.

Hands-on with decorating Tamara painted the stripes on the hand dyed curtains in the living room herself “I wanted striped curtains but not the classic normal proper stripes more wobbly hand done looking.”

She advises not to be afraid of colour “I think the key is to think you don’t have to live with it forever. Get a load of test pots and paint them and see the effect in different lights and avoid flat colour when its’ a bright colour, washes and textures work best.”…

Labour Of Love, Gemma Ahern House Feature, Deco Idees Belgium/ Home Journal Hong Kong, Elle Dekor Croatia, 2009

If you’re reading this article, it’s fair to say you know a little about design. If so, then you’ve no doubt just done a double take…

Smokey coloured floors and luxurious dark walls, neon accessories nestling in corners and oversized objects that add humour, are trademarks of London based interior designer and boutique owner Abigail Ahern. Her designs are known for their originality and because of this, their price tag.

So when Gemma Ahern asked her sister to help re-design her and her graphic designer boyfriends’ apartment on a budget of £6500, you might be forgiven for assuming this was an impossible task…

Entente Cordiale, The Telegraph Magazine, 2009

A holiday home in Arcachon benefits from a French-Kiwi collaboration. By Rohini Wahi. Photographs by Michael Paul.

Karine Kong was born in Fumel, a village near Agen  in south-west France, and has happy memories of childhood holidays spent on the Atlantic coast near Arcachon. She and her sister, Elodie, would run around on the beaches, climb the Dune du Pilat (the highest sand dune in Europe) and discover little paths winding through the pine trees. They learnt how to swim at Club Mickey, and after- wards ate Nutella tartines at their grandmother’s house. On the other side of the world, Kong’s partner, Steve Kirk, had a similarly carefree upbringing in Waihi Beach, on New Zealand’s North Island. So when the couple had a daughter of their own, they wanted her to experience the same happy and carefree childhood that they had enjoyed…

Say It With Flowers, Profile of Artist Petra Borner, Spaces 2009

Petra Borner is like a subliminal message; transmitted through book jackets and Ikea patterns, magazine covers and giant billboard campaigns. Her distinctive botanical style graces so many mediums that her art begins to take on a genre of its own till you realise it is Borner alone who is taking over the design world with her addictive imagery.

Borner was born in Sweden and grew up in a home where craft and textile art was a declared family hobby. Idyllically her summers would often be spent in the family’s garden with extended family, experimenting with dying yarns and fabrics, creating batik or sewing. Drawing and creativity as encouraged so Borner never considered a career beyond art.

After graduating in 1999, Borner worked within the fashion industry in London and New York, launching her own label whilst producing fashion illustrations for magazines. Three years later realising her heart lay in art and illustration, she focused full-time on refining the eye-catching style which was to become her trademark…
