The notion of a unified public sphere can itself, like other Enlightenment ideals, work to cloud and (thus) reproduce extant power relations. It is difficult, if not impossible, for people to simply debate as if they are equally powerful in other realms. More important is the nurturing of new “counter-publics” in education, sites and spaces where alternative discourses about the public can be created. “Educational publics,” she writes, “forming in this sphere of civil society, can use the energy of cultural mobilization to form creative alternatives that may seriously challenge the universal public school ideal.

This work had a mooring in class and class-based politics, and looked at INTRODUCTION 23 the working class not as a static entity which could be defined a priori but as an emergent phenomena, constructed and reconstructed through material practices. Thompson’s The Making of the English Working Class (1963) argued that “class is a relationship, and not a thing,” one “embodied in real people in a real context” (pp. 1–2). Thompson’s focus, in trying to understand the constitution of the English working class, was not “official history” but the lives of “ordinary” people —“the poor stockinger, the Luddite cropper, the ‘obsolete’ hand-loom weaver, the ‘utopian’ artist” among others.
