DDT (dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane), and other organo- chlorine and organophosphate pesticides – the chemicals that were to cause so much harm to wildlife in the future – weren’t introduced into agriculture until after the Second World War. In Howard’s time, most of the insecticides were derived from plants and broke down quickly in the soil, so they didn’t end up in food or cause any lasting damage to the environment. That would be a problem for future generations to grapple with. But the health of the nation was an important preoccupation in the 1930s, as indeed it is today, though for entirely different reasons.

Government funding was highly unlikely, and no support could be expected from the agricultural industry. In spite of Howard’s reservations, Lady Balfour forged ahead and in 1939 the ‘Haughley Experiment’ began. It ran for 30 years and while it yielded many valuable insights, it turned out to be ruinously expensive, just as Howard had predicted, and never did produce the clear outcome that Lady Balfour had hoped for. Even so, her belief in the value of naturally derived fertility and organic farming never faltered.
