Welchen Einfluss eine Klimaerwärmung auf Verteilung und Stärke der Wolkenbedeckung hat, ist unsicher. Prinzipiell gilt, dass niedere Wasserwolken überwiegend Sonnenlicht streuen und damit abkühlend wirken, hohe Eiswolken hingegen für die Sonnenstrahlung fast transparent sind, aber thermische Strahlung absorbieren und daher erwärmend wirken. Ob der Netto-Effekt einer Klimaerwärmung auf die Strahlungsbilanz von Wolken positiv oder negativ ist, wird von verschiedenen Klimamodellen unterschiedlich beantwortet.
