Developing nonfiction reading strategies is essential to literacy and is too often overlooked in our classrooms. Summarizing information, determining importance, and recognizing bias are essential strategies that need to be taught and practiced in order to develop able independent readers. Assigning a nonfiction book on their topic allows me time to teach students these strategies and helps my students develop critical reading skills. An additional benefit of assigning nonfiction is that it often appeals to reluctant readers who are uninterested in fiction.
