12 Isolated sentences are ambiguous without the provision of a wider, and suitable, context. The Investigations may seem to present such a theory, but the hermeneutical circle is terminated with the discovery of the meaning of a sentence when an appropriate horizon is found, and Wittgenstein has a hermeneutics that is not threatened by the endless cycles of interpretation engendered by the hermeneutical circle. The sentence is always the unit of meaning for Wittgenstein. Even when he speaks of "moves in a language game" or develops primitive language games whose units are not articulate in the way our sentences exhibit an analyzable syntax, the discussion of meaning is always in the context of understanding sentences.

The decision to volunteer represented a commitment to coercive values for which Wittgenstein thought no discursive justification could be given. At the same time, Wittgenstein worked almost daily at recording notes on philosophical problems into a series of notebooks. This method of developing his thoughts became his habit. These early notes were later organized and edited into the manuscript of the Tractatus, a manuscript that he had with him in prison camp at the end of the war. Considering that his Tractatus had solved the problems of philosophy, Wittgenstein turned to the life of a village schoolteacher.

6 This concern illustrates the way in which language becomes interwoven with received action and usage. Questions of orthography can be settled. Wherever language seems to become mysterious or controversial, Wittgenstein analogously calls for a return to clear cases. Because we can lay down rules that articulate syntax and survey usage, questions of language lie within our control and within the resources of language as interwoven with life, allowing us the clear anticipations of meaning that are required to use language coherently.
