Although Nevada certainly enjoys a reputation for what might be considered as social liberalism (legalized gambling and prostitution), there is little reason to believe it to be the hotbed of political liberalism that our pooled state survey would suggest. As judged by its presidential voting, the behavior of its congressional representatives, and the presence of a significant Mormon population, the signs suggest Nevada is quite politically conservative, like many of its western neighbors. Important side evidence from CBS/NYT exit polls for Nevada clinches the validity of our concern about Nevada's ideology.
The present chapter attempts to separate the two sources of differences in state ideological identification and state partisan identification. One source is demography - the ideological or partisan characteristics of the groups that make up the state sample. The second source is culture - the estimated effect of state residence itself apart from demography. Here we analyze only the subset of the CBS/NYT surveys for which a full set of respondent demographic characteristics were ascertained. We examine the differing effects of 47 states, excluding Alaska and Hawaii (no interviews) and Nevada (an outlier sample, see Chapter 2).
