Technological advances demand higher levels of technical education while concentrating hightech occupations in smaller proportions of labor forces. Skilled manual occupations dwindle away, and workers are relegated to less skilled, service employments.

Mechanization of services has the same effect as mechanization of manufacturing. Increases in both displace workers and relegate them to labor-intensive services. Bluestone and Harrison ( 1982:62ff) discuss this "ripple effect" at length. In the meantime, other shifts in labor force composition have affected labor force competition.
