Boyesen became one of America's best known teachers and lecturers. His Goethe and Schiller, essentially an English re-working of German scholarship and criticism, went into ten editions. His three collections of essays on German and Scandinavian literature published in the 1890's are magazine pieces, usually reprinted without revision. Boyesen was a literary journalist and popularizer, not a scholar and critic. But he was an important EuropeanAmerican liaison man who argued persuasively that Americans were so subservient to British literature that they ignored Goethe and Ibsen.
